The Problem
This customer had his roof installed about 10 years ago. He had a leak above his window in the front of the house. When we inspected it, we decided the best course would be to replace the entire front slope of the home to ensure everything was flashed and installed correctly. When that did not fit into the customer’s budget, we settled on repairing from the bottom of the roof to the bottom of the dormers. When we ripped the roof off, there were two glaring, separate issues. The first is that the previous roofing company did not use Ice & Water Shield on the bottom 3 feet of the roof. Ice & Water Shield is a rubberized leak barrier that helps prevent water from working its way under the shingles also known as ice dams which occurs when snow melts on the roof and refreezes, trapping water along the edge. The other issue this homeowner had was with the gutter installation. The gutter was installed using roof straps which was needed since there was no fascia board. The straps secures the gutter to the roof. The gutter installer installed the straps on top of the roof shingles and secured them using improper screws. The improper screws caused a penetration in the roof that allowed for a leak.
The Solution
We were able to rip out the shingles, replace the rotten plywood, install ice and water shields, and properly secure the gutter to the roof.
